Pantone have officially announced their colour of the year for 2018: Ultra violet

A gorgeous shade of purple, Ultra Violet is an uplifting colour that inspires creativity – fans of the shade have included luminaries like Frank Lloyd Wright, and of course, Prince. Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman described the colour as “that complexity, that marriage, between the passionate red violets and the strong indigo purples.”

Pantone are no strangers to making symbolic colour choices to represent the year to come, and this bold, futuristic shade is an optimistic and bright one.

Here’s a quick guide to using it in your home…

At first glance this shade can feel overwhelming and perhaps a little challenging to match, but adding a splash into an otherwise neutral space allows the colour to shine without taking over. Team ultraviolet chairs with a white high gloss table for a very modern feel.

For the bolder among us, here’s our favourite example of using Ultra Violet on the wall with a sleek black dining set:

If you do opt for such a strong colour on the wall, it’s a good idea not to introduce too many colours. Instead, accessorise with monochrome hues in black, white and grey for a look that packs a style punch.

These principles work to create a modern, stylish feel in the living room too. Here, a feature sofa really sets the tone, with artwork that complements and mirrors its purple hue, while the white on the walls and carpets keep the room elegant and grounded.

Speaking of art: with crystals set to be a big trend in 2018, why not combine them with this gorgeous agate wall art featuring various purple and violet shades?

And if a feature wall in ultra violet interests you but still feels a bit much, a faded wall could be the perfect choice.
