How to dress & style a sofa

An in-depth guide on how to style your sofa with cushions and throws using colour, texture and pattern.

Dressing your sofa with throws and cushions is an easy, affordable way to refresh your living room. Bringing in the finishing touches with pops of colour, detailed prints and soft textures will instantly update your couch.
When thinking of how to style cushions on your sofa, look at colours that are already in your room and see how they might contrast your couch. Meanwhile, sofa throw ideas work well around cosiness, like a chunky wool throw for snuggling up on cold nights.
From what textures to use, pattern ideas to colour tips, discover all there is to know about how to dress your sofa. Once you’re done reading, browse our sofas to get started.

1. Play with patterns

Grey corner sofas
If you have a neutral sofa, show off your playful side with colourful, patterned cushions. For an easy start, pull in a few colours from any artwork or accessories around your room. As for the patterns you choose, they don’t need to match. Mix stripes with geometrics or floral prints.
When dressing cushions on a sofa, mix prints and patterns to create a more casual, lived-in vibe. To prevent overwhelming the room, add in some cushions in plain colours to balance the look. When styling neutral sofas like grey, decide on a theme when styling or what patterns you want to introduce to liven up the space. If you prefer to add a more toned-down touch, you can still decorate with prints and patterns but choose a softer palette like other neutral tones for a light contrast.

2. Try black and white prints

Loren 3 Seater Sofa
The absence of colour in monochrome interiors doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your cushions. If you’re sticking to a black and white palette, pick out patterned cushions for a cool, modern style. This could look like stripes, geometric prints, animal motifs – anything goes if you’re willing to experiment.
Introduce a cosy, wool throw in a neutral colour like grey, cream or beige to soften the space further. It’s up to you if you want the throws to complement or contrast against the cushions. For a neat look, fold and drape the throw over the sofa arm. If you want to add more than one throw to the sofa, you can hang one on either corner for a balanced look. Depending on the season, you can swap throws like wool for autumn and winter and linen or cotton for spring and summer.

3. Colour block jewel tones

Arden 2 Seater Sofa
If your modern living room doesn’t shy away from big and bold colours, dress your sofa with throws and cushions in jewel tones to uplift the space even more. Jewel tones look especially vibrant with textures like velvet or plush fabric. Play around with different jewel tones like amber, amethyst or ruby red for your cushions.
Depending on the colour of your sofa, jewel tones can either stand out or warm it up. If your sofa is in a dark tone like black or dark grey, choose jewel tones like mustard, burgundy or teal to stand out. For a light-coloured sofa, go for jewel tones like amethyst, ruby red or amber to heat up the room. Balance the bright jewel tones with neutral cushions for subtle contrast. Complete the look with a throw and choose a colour that contrasts with the sofa or cushions for a bold statement.

4. Layer with neutrals

Arden Sofa Set
In a simple, pared-back living room, neutral cushions bring style and elegance. Muted colours like soft beige, light greys, and creamy whites have a soothing quality. They look great against a light brown sofa for a relaxing look.
With neutrals this light in colour, consider your fabric options and how they add touches of luxe and comfort. Play with contrast using linen, cotton or silk cushion covers. This will prevent the room from feeling flat and add more depth. Focus on creating a soothing and timeless feel; layer different textures by mixing and matching with different cushion covers or throws. 5. Mix and match fabrics and textures

Hampton 3 Seater Sofa
Use a variety of textures when you dress your sofa with cushions and throws. From velvet, silk and linen to trendy fabrics like soft bouclé – choose textiles that contrast with your sofa upholstery. This creates a more natural, stylish look.
Certain textures can also make colours stand out more than others. A good tip is to choose a colour and texture that feels cosy and inviting like sage green and linen. “To create a calming and tranquil setting, dress your sofa with neutral-coloured cushions and soft green accents in tactile fabrics such as linen, cotton and boucle,” says Amanda Bailey-Rook, Senior Stylist & Creative Coordinator at Furniture And Choice. “Elevate the look even further by adding a knitted or woven throw in a natural material such as wool. The soft green home furnishings harmonise with any houseplants and help create a relaxed space to unwind after a busy day.”
Using a throw also adds texture and comfort for snuggling up. Opt for a lighter fabric like cotton for spring and summer, and cosy wool for autumn and winter.

6. Stick to the rule of three

Lexi 3 Seater Sofa
In interior design, the rule of three refers to arranging items in odd numbers like 3, 5 and so on. It’s more memorable and visually pleasing than groups of even numbers. This is because grouping cushions in odd numbers forces your eyes to move around and see the natural flow of things.
To apply the rule of 3 when you arrange cushions on your sofa, first think about a common theme, like cushions in the same colour but in different textures. Try it out in a solid colour in velvet, silk and faux fur cushion covers. For example, you can pair two velvet cushions with one faux fur cushion on a 2-seater sofa. As you get more comfortable with this rule, play around with prints and bolder colours in groups of 3. For larger sofas like 3-seater or corner sofas, experiment with groups of 5 or 7 cushions.

7. Consider the size and shape of your cushions

Loren Sofa Collection
Cushions that all look the same could end up creating a dull, flat look that may not feel very inviting. Instead, mix up cushion shapes and sizes for cosier, relaxed vibes when you dress a sofa with cushions. Mixing and matching cushions in different sizes makes the space look more lived-in, setting the scene for a calming ambience.
A round cushion, for instance, is a surprising addition next to square and rectangular cushions. Choose the same colour palette for all of them if you prefer a subtle effect, or use prints to highlight their shapes even more. If you’re playing around with cushions in different sizes, it’s a good idea to arrange the larger cushions at the corner of the sofa and then put the smaller cushions closer to the middle. This creates a layered look that won’t overwhelm the room.

8. Don't forget about comfort

Sorrento 3 Seater Sofa
Anything you add to your sofa should come down to how much comfort it’ll bring. Styling shouldn’t compromise comfort but add to it. If you need something supportive, choose cushions with foam filling which promise firmness with lots of comfort. If you’re looking for a cushion with softer fillings that’s still supportive, choose cushions with a feather and down blend.
Bolster cushions, for example, are sometimes overlooked in favour of traditional scatter cushions, but these long and narrow pillows can provide extra lower back support for better comfort. If you do choose bolster cushions, keep it at a minimum to avoid overcrowding your sofa. Aside from cushions, adding a throw will turn up the comfort factor, especially in winter.

9. Layering is key

Grey fabric sofas
As we’ve mentioned before, introducing a throw can instantly elevate your sofa. It will make the room feel more inviting and is super easy to swap around if you want to update your living room. Aside from that, throws help protect your sofa from every day wear and tear like pet hair, crumbs and dirt.
When it comes to choosing the best throw for your sofa, pick one that ticks both stylish and practical boxes. It should keep you warm on a cold night and fit right in with the cushions on your sofa. For more tips and guidance, check out our guide on how to put a throw on a sofa.
