Reducing Waste

Reducing waste. Helping the planet a little bit at a time…

Natural by Design

Nature is imperfect: branches create knots in wood; different soil, weather and locations affects wood colour. We could eliminate these natural imperfections, but at a cost to both our customers and the planet.

Our products are made from natural resources; we believe slight imperfections are part of their beauty. Using as much of a tree as we can, eliminating waste, and incorporating natural elements into our products allows us to reduce our environmental impact and keep our prices down.

“For us, a perfect product is a natural product.”

We intend to document the ways we make our own small contribution to helping the planet. Here’s our first examples of how we reduce waste, save resources and still produce a quality product.

1. Laminated Legs

Look closely at our dining chairs and you may see a join or a few joins in the back legs, an unevenness in colour and grain, it’s minimal but its there and this is why:

For both stability and aesthetic reasons, back legs on chairs are often tall and curved. Crafting such shapes from a single piece of wood is particularly wasteful. Timber sections are not normally very wide; we may only get 1 or 2 legs from a standard piece of lumber. In fact we could be wasting up to 50% of the timber to make a single leg.

To combat this wastage (and of course, to save costs), we laminate (glue) many pieces of timber together and make a large, stable and strong piece of timber from which we can cut many curved legs. This means far less wastage but also slight imperfections, we believe it’s a compromise worth making.

2. Leather Markings & Shading

Leather is a natural product and each hide will have its own individual characteristics and natural marks. Differences in the grain, texture and colour may be apparent from one hide to another and even within the same hide.

If we were to remove these imperfections many more hides would be used and many more would be wasted.

As we believe these markings and shading differences add to the character of our furniture, we have decided to accept them as part of their individual appearance, in turn helping to reduce our waste and our impact on the environment.

3. Recycling

Where ever possible all packaging is recycled or reused.

4. We Want To Hear From You!

If you have any ideas or suggestions that will help us reduce our impact on the environment then we would love to hear from you. Simply email us at info@furniturechoice.co.uk.
